Charlotte Perriand L'œuvre complète Volume II - 1940-1955
Jacques Barsac
Norma, 2015

The second volume of Charlotte Perriand's complete work covers the years of war and reconstruction from 1940 to 1955. Invited in 1940 by the Japanese government as an advisor to guide production in the field of equipment for the home, Charlotte Perriand will leave a deep imprint in the history of Japanese design, notably through her conferences and two exhibitions, Tradition, selection, creation (1941) and Proposition d'une synthèse des arts, Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Charlotte Perriand ( 1955). The two stays that she made in Japan confirmed the modernist vision that she developed alongside Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the 1930s and will nourish her creativity in the following decades. Charlotte Perriand participates in major reconstruction projects in France and Africa, and collaborates with the main architects of the time, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Paul Nelson, Jean de Mailly, etc. She also works with the Ateliers Jean Prouvé, ensures the artistic direction of the furniture department and designs furniture, including the famous Mexico and Tunisia libraries and many other emblematic models of the 1950s. This work reveals the will of a designer committed to developing a new art of living under the sign of modernity for all and the synthesis of the arts: architecture, painting and design.
