Gerrit Rietveld, die Revolution des Raums

The book 'Gerrit Rietveld - The Revolution of Space' is the first comprehensive monograph on Rietveld's work in German. It will accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. The chapters are thematically structured and deal with, for example, Rietveld's relationship to De Stijl and the Bauhaus, but also with lesser-known aspects such as Rietveld's social housing or his preoccupation with industrial production. In this way, they trace Rietveld's career - from his humble beginnings as a cabinet maker to his last years as a famous architect. The Rietveld Schröder House, which was one of the few buildings from the twentieth century to be granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has its own chapter dedicated. The publication is complemented by numerous photographs and high-quality reproductions of plans, drawings and sketches as well as a chronology of Gerrit Rietveld's most important works. A basic work for researchers as well as for laymen - and a must for all fans of classical modernism! The Dutchman Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) is one of the most important designers and architects of the 20th century. Already at a young age he wrote design history with the Red-Blue Chair (1918/1923), his Rietveld-Schröder-Haus (1924) is still an icon of modern architecture today. Rietveld moved in the artistic avant-garde around De Stijl founder Theo van Doesburg, designed other furniture classics such as the legendary Zig-Zag Chair (1932), but also important buildings such as the Dutch Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Rietveld's work not only inspired contemporaries, but also inspires designers and architects with its astonishing topicality: From Verner Panton to Konstantin Grcic, designers have repeatedly referred to Rietveld.
